How to downgrade an Android OS on your Android Phone

This tutorial will help you in getting to know how to downgrade your mobile to a lower Android OS version.

Upgrading your phone is a much simpler task and most of the times, the updates are released OTA (Over The Air) and you will receive a notification of the software upgrade as soon as they are available for your device, and your device is connected to the internet. But the difficult task is, once you have upgraded, how to downgrade to a lower Android OS version.

Sometimes, if you have a mobile phone with lower specs like less processor and less RAM, upgrading to the latest version might slow down your mobile and your apps might start to lag a bit. In this case, you wish that there should be a way to downgrade to the same old Android OS on which you were before. Well, you can be happy now as the following steps will guide you through the whole process of downgrading your Android OS.

Things you need

You will need to have the following software downloaded and installed in your system to which you will connect your device.

  • Download FlashTool (it’s free software so don’t pay for it ever)
  • Download PC companion for your device (look it up on company’s website)
  • Download USB drivers if they do not come with PC companion.
  • Backup your phone data.

The Procedure

These steps should be taken as they are written. You cannot skip one step and go to another unless specified. Do not connect your phone to the computer until it asks for it.

1. Open the FlashTool that you downloaded. Run it as administrator by right clicking on it and selecting the option.
2. Now go to the location where FlashTool is installed (e.g. C:\FlashTool).

3. From there go to Firmwares folder.
4. Delete everything from this folder.

5. Now download the required ROM that you want to downgrade to. It is always preferred if you downgrade up to 1 level only (e.g. from GingerBread to Froyo, not GingerBread to Éclair).
6. Once downloaded, copy this ROM to the Firmwares folder in C:\FlashTool\Firmwares
7. Close the FlashTool and run it again as administrator.
8. Check the Wipe User Data option. After that, press OK.

9. Wait till the whole process is completed. It will now ask you to connect your phone to the computer. Use the back USB port for this purpose not the front USB port if you have it.
10. You will see that the FlashTool will start flashing your device with the downgraded Android OS ROM that you downloaded earlier.
11. Once done, it will restart your phone. If it doesn’t, manually restart it.
12. Now open PC companion while keeping the phone connected to the computer.
13. Now use PC companion will install the required software in your device. You can also use it to install apps of your choice.

So, in this way, you have successfully downgraded your mobile phone to a lower Android OS version. You can now unplug the device and restore the backup if needed.
